E-retailers' stocks hit skids

Article Abstract:

Shares of electronic retailers fell 4.1% on Oct 31, 1999 in USA Today's Internet 100 index. Among the e-retailers affected were Amazon.com and eBay. Shares, however, of brick-and-mortar consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, increased by 15%. The fall in e-retailers' stock price came as their sales for the holiday season increased, reaching 4.4 million orders during the last weekend of October. Currently, only 5% of total holiday shopping valued at $180 billion is conducted through the Internet.

Stock listing on eBay sets off controversy

Article Abstract:

Online auctioneer eBay has encountered a controversy when a customer, Dave Tumey, listed his 10% stake in Yellow Springs, OH-based Brain Actuated Technologies for auction at the starting price of $599,000. The offer was immediately pulled out of the site when the newspaper, USA Today, contacted ebay about the stock listing. Ebay also returned the auction fee paid by Tumey. Security law experts offered contrasting opinions on whether selling stocks over the Internet is legal.
