EcomCard after teens with new e-card

Article Abstract:

EcomCard Inc. (Markham, Ont.) is targeting the $156-billion teenage e-commerce market with a prepaid e-commerce card. The e-commerce cards are expected to surpass traditional credit cards as the main method of purchasing online goods. Consumers can pick up an EcomCard at any participating store or bank and have it programmed with the maximum amount they want to spend. The card would have a 16-digit code that consumers would enter to purchase their online goods. The main difference between traditional credit cards and the EcomCard is that is would be anonymous and when the desired sum is spent, it is disposable. According to Patrick Thoburn, director of research and Internet strategy at Toronto's Youth Culture, the biggest barrier to teens engaging in e-commerce buying is that their parents do not want to put their credit card numbers online. The EcomCard is expected to allay many of the fears consumers have about credit card security on the Internet.
