The leaders avoided diplomatic blunders at their meeting. Boris Yeltsin was invited to the last part. The expected clash between French Jacques Chirac and Canadian Jean Chretien over Quebec did not happen. The notion of opening the group to newly emerging economic powers was sidestepped for the moment.

A house divided: after a narrow no win, federalists fear that the real war is only starting

Article Abstract:

The Oct 30, 1995, referendum on Quebec independence was defeated by a narrow margin, with 50.6% of voters opposing the measure and 49.4% approving it. Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau blamed the loss on business interests and the ethnic vote. The vote makes constitutional reform likely.

Summertime blues: Jean Chretien's Quebec strategy is fine for now, but it may just be the calm before the storm

Article Abstract:

Canadian Prime Minister Chretien's decision to say little about Quebec's sovereignty during summer 1995, has been wise. However, nationalistic rhetoric may soon heat up again, and the issue of a possible sovereignty referendum will likely reappear.
