Electronic help in making a point, on occasion: a simpler way to make an impressive presentation

Article Abstract:

Power Up Software's $249.95 Express Presenter is a presentation software package designed for the occasional business presenter, not for the graphics expert, data analysis specialist or regular presenter. The program allows users to create charts, titles, graphs, and apply a series of images from clip art to presentations. Three viewing modes allow for independent slide shows, titles sorting and storyboards including charts and text. The end product can be printed on many standard printers, sent out and transformed into overhead transparencies or slides, or shown on the computer monitor. Data can be brought in from programs such as Lotus 1-2-3 with text formats such as ASCII. The manual occasionally indicated a detail that did not correspond with the actual usage of the software and there were a few bugs. Express Presenter requires DOS 3.0 or later, 640Kbytes or working memory, a graphics card and a Microsoft-compatible pointing device.

Orienting yourself worldwide in time

Article Abstract:

Geoclock is a shareware computer program that is available in an expanded form from its author, Joseph R. Ahlgren, for a $30 registration fee. Geoclock provides users with a map of the world including major cities and national boundaries, with time relative to Washington DC supplied for each city. The base time can be adjusted to any city, and the program works in color, providing different shadings for day, night, dusk and dawn. Other information provided includes the time of sunset and sunrise; the elevation, longitude and latitude of the sun; and the ability to zoom in on any portion of the map or to display any of 27 other maps. The software works well but can be difficult to install because of peculiarities. For example, a floppy disk must be in drive A to complete installation, and the command INSTALL must be typed in all upper-case letters.
