In the period since August 1998, Ted Brandsen, the artistic director of West Australian Ballet in Perth, has increased performance attendance by almost 40 percent, and box office numbers have grown by 25%. West Australian Ballet is the oldest dance company in Australia, and will turn 50 in 2002.

Lord of the dance: Rudolf Nureyev was ballet's first superstar

Article Abstract:

Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union in 1961 and developed his creative abilities to a degree not previously known in the ballet world. He was known for his stage presence and his passion for the dance. He died of AIDS-related heart complications at age 54.
