Energy from biomass

Article Abstract:

Biomass is surprisingly the main renewable alternative energy source used in the US. Around 84% of the energy is used by wood and paper mills and additional uses are being discovered especially in the waste disposal industry. The energy source is cheap and competes favorably with that produced by coal-fired power plants. However, biomass is considered the most polluting form of alternative energy source. Research on methods to decrease the energy source's adverse effect on the environment is underway.

Driving out oil dependency ... the push to develop clean cars

Article Abstract:

The US reliance on petroleum could be broken through a serious energy policy that focuses on transportation such as private automobiles, trucks and buses. More than 11 million of the estimated 17 million oil barrels of daily consumption by Americans are used up by vehicles. Alternative fuel sources exist in the form of methanol, natural gas and electric power. All have their advantages in terms of reduced pollution but carry disadvantages in terms of cost and effect on performance of vehicles.

Not-so-hot prospects

Article Abstract:

Geothermal energy has become a popular source of renewable energy in the US which has more than 2,800 megawatts of geothermal capacity. Considered as having infinite capabilities, geothermal power has, nevertheless, some technical problems. Technological research on the matter has still a long way to go in terms of providing means to fully tap the geothermal resource. Additionally, the resource is not available widely and is confined to certain geographical areas such as California.
