A district court opinion on its ruling that Texas may continue to use standardized tests to determine whether or not its high school students can graduate reflects the urgent need to address serious flaws in the educational system. Students and parents across the USA are struggling to cope with this educational reform that can make or break a child's future. These mandated tests, which are being too heavily relied on by states and school districts, are potentially disastrous for children, parents, schools, teachers and administrators.

EPA bans pesticide as harmful to kids

Article Abstract:

The EPA has banned chlorpyrifos, the most popular household pesticide in the US, after concluding that it may be harmful to children. Chlorpyrifos, which is sold under the labels Dursban or Lorsban, is used in more than 800 products, including flea collars and insecticides that kill cockroaches, termites, ants and grubs. The EPA has given manufacturers of until Dec 2000 to stop the production of chlorpyrifos for household sprays and for exterminators which spray the chemical in schools, day care centers and parks.

Law to protect kids on line faces court test next week

Article Abstract:

A federal judge in Philadelphia, PA, will rule on whether the US government can start to enforce the Child Online Protection Act which was crafted to protect users under 17 from Internet pornography. The court will either end or extend the temporary block on the law when it expires on Feb 1, 1999. The law is expected to make difficult for minors to access pornographic materials on the Net. However, it does not cover other areas such as e-mail, Usenet newsgroups, noncommercials sites and operations outside the US.
