F.C.C. PLAN TO EASE CURBS ON BIG MEDIA HITS SENATE SNAG

Article Abstract:

The US Senate has adopted a resolution that negates the FCC's attempt to make it easier for large media companies to expand their acquisitions of other media businesses. Congressional supporters of the resolution have attached amendments to other bills under legislative consideration to insure that the new FCC merger rules do not become law. This rejection of the FCC's policies is seen as a major rejection of FCC chairman Michael Powell's influence. The Senate strategy owes its success to the 1996 Congressional Review Act that allows legislators to repeal government regulations.
