Factory farms: Outside the beltway

Article Abstract:

Nine states in the U.S. have barred or restricted corporate farming in order to limit the economic impact of large-scale farms and make smaller producers more competitive. CAFOs are under pressure in many states, as consumers are joining Community Supported Agriculture programs, in which they pay a local farm for a share of its output, and several organizations are promoting goods raised locally by using small-scale methods.

Factory farms: New technology

Article Abstract:

An estimated 16 percent of the U.S. workforce remained on farms by 1945, but productivity continued to increase even after the war due to mechanization, rural electrification and synthetic chemical fertilizers. Technological advances helped transform livestock farming from an art into a science, including the production of new animal strains that maximized profits.

Factory farms: New food fears

Article Abstract:

Mad cow disease outbreaks in the late 1980s and early 1990s have revealed questionable feeding practices. The spread of avian flu (H5N1) throughout poultry flocks in Asia in 2003 and 2004 and mad cow disease indicate that animal-borne diseases could spread readily through a centralized national food industry.
