'Fairer' transplant rules set

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Health and Human Services is issuing a new set of transplant rules that could restructure the way the medical community handles transplant cases. The rules call for the establishment of more clear-cut guidelines on patient selection as well as the need for hospitals to share more data about more patients. It would also require strict compliance from doctors to ensure higher survival rates for transplant patients. Pending the outcome of the review of UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing), the private group that manages the transplant system, the policies are expected to take effect after 30 days.
