More oomph with Mac's System 7.0: but it will take awhile for software companies to match the features

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer Inc's System 7.0 adds power to the Macintosh operating system without increasing its complexity. But users will not be able to take full advantage of System 7.0 until software developers rewrite their applications, which could take months. Among improved features that are incorporated into System 7.0 are: more effective file sharing, easier multitasking, creation of 'alias' files, virtual memory, an icon symbol called 'balloon help' that makes it easy to get advice on almost any Macintosh function, Truetype scalable fonts, and interapplication communications. Two books are recommended: The System 7 Book, by Craig Danuloff ($22.95, from Ventana Press); and The Macintosh Bible Guide to System 7, by Charles Rubin ($12, from Goldstein & Blair). An alternative way to obtain System 7.0 or to learn about it is to join a Macintosh users' group.

The latest for desktop publishers

Article Abstract:

Desktop publishing software is getting easier to use and more powerful. A number of products recently introduced are aimed at making professional looking documents available without having to learn complicated programs. Silicon Beach Software's $295 Personal Press is designed for extreme user friendliness and runs on the Macintosh. Power Up Software Inc's $149.95 Power Up Express Publisher for the IBM PS/2 and PCs uses a Windows-like interface, automatically flows text around irregular graphics and can be used with dot-matrix or laser printers. Broderbund Software's $199.95 Type Styler for the Mac offers spectacular effects with headlines and graphics and 10 built-in type fonts. Adobe System's $99 Type Manager will improve the way type fonts appear on the computer screen and runs on the Mac.
