Feeling the Strain From Stretching the Paycheck

Article Abstract:

Shopping trends during the 2003 Christmas holiday season are reflecting how much Americans are struggling financially from paycheck to paycheck. Wal-Mart Stores offers customers a special layaway plan that enables them to put 10% down and pay off the rest of their purchases in 60 days. Wal-Mart also notices that there are selling spikes at the 1st and 15th of every month when people are paid. While the US economy is showing signs of improvement, workers have not experienced wage increases, making Christmas a difficult time of year.
