File swapping is new route for pornography on Internet

Article Abstract:

Representatives Henry A. Waxman and Steve Largent released a report warning that online file-swapping services that use 'peer-to-peer' technology can give children and teens access to hard-core pornographic images and videos. Investigators using the seven most popular Internet filtering programs for computers found that six of the seven did not block the pornographic content. Internet Guard Dog was the only program that blocked file-sharing in its default setting. The lawmakers did not call for legislation on the issue, but they wanted to make parents aware of the situation, and Mr. Largent has written to Attorney General John Ashcroft asking for stricter enforcement of obscenity laws currently on the books.

That Parent-Child Conversation Is Becoming Instant, and Online

Article Abstract:

Parents are discovering new ways to interact with their teenage children through instant messaging services. Many teenagers are more comfortable avoiding face-to-face communication and will be more responsive when they can use instant messages through AOL, Microsoft or Yahoo. Almost 75% of teenage online users rely on instant messaging with their friends, and parents are experiencing quicker ways to talk to their children even in the same house at the same time.
