Firestone not alone in suspect tire fixes

Article Abstract:

Several former employees of Copper Tire and Rubber Co testified in an Arkansas case that a defective Cooper tire may have caused a fatal car crash in 1998. They said that a sharp tool called an awl was routinely used at Cooper to pierce tires and steel belts to remove blisters in tires. They added that a solvent was being used at Cooper to soften hardened rubber so that it can be used again. Plaintiffs in the Arkansas case, which caused the deathfs of four persons, said the tread of a Cooper tire peeled, sending the car out of control and onto the path of an oncoming car.
