Airlines relax hiring rules in quest for pilots

Article Abstract:

A booming market for airline pilots has caused airline firms to slightly lower their hiring standards. Airlines are now permitting the entry of pilots who wear glasses and those who have not finished their college education. The companies, however, are quick to say that passenger safety will not be compromised since those hired are usually better qualified. Some of the factors behind the high demand for pilots include the growth of the corporate jet market and the retirement of pilots who began flying in the 1960s.

Frequent-flier benefits likely to increase - but so are costs

Article Abstract:

US Airways Inc's acquisition by United Air Lines Inc will result in some immediate benefits to consumers but will result in higher airfare fees in the future. Airfare experts agree that combining the operations of the two airlines will result in such immediate benefits as easier connections and a bigger compilation of frequent-flier miles as well as boost the overall strength of the two airlines. However, they caution that any move that reduces the number of competitors in the industry ultimately results in higher fares.
