The Liberal Party's tight fiscal policies have been successful in reducing the federal deficit and spurring economic growth. Economists predict that Canada should show a $2-billion surplus by 1998-99. This could lead to tax cuts and robust economic growth, if inflation or sovereignty issues do not derail it.
