Article Abstract:

Australian Custom and Immigration officials declined to accept refugees from Irian Jaya and shipped them back across to Papua New Guinea. These people's struggle for independence has left them without a home, so they have settled along the border formed by Indonesian and Australian authorities in the 1960s. The Organisasi Papua Merdeka guerrillas and the Indonesian Army have constantly fought, claiming hundreds of lives since the 1960s.

Rebel leader Harold Keke demands for a federal government system in Guadalcanal, addressed by the government even after a long time of signing the peace agreement in October 2000, ended hostilities between rival ethnic militias from Guadalcanal and Malaita islands. Keke states that he his fighting against corrupt politicians for defending his land rights.

Andrew Nori, a Malaitan man in Solomon Islands organized the movement called Maasina Rule, was enabled to unite people in a new era of self determination. He was keen on maintaining a centralized system of government for the SolomonEs, which helped them to win independence.
