Fund Misconduct Is Common, Panel Is Told

Article Abstract:

Two officials from Canary Capital Partners and Putnam Investments testified before a Senate panel investigating mutual fund industry abuses. James Nesfield stated it was easy to find mutual fund brokers who would engage in market timing trades with Canary, and Peter Scannell had tried to alert the SEC about corrupt practices at Putnam but was ignored and had to go to Massachusetts authorities to get government action to stop the market timing practices. Putnam has offered to reduce investment fees and expense ratios, and decrease upfront sales charges from 0.75 to 0.25 each investment as a way of re-establishing investor confidence.
