When research is no longer the ugly duckling

Article Abstract:

Research and development is given new emphasis at many companies in the computer hardware and software industries. While most development efforts in these industries are intensely market-oriented and operate on tight deadlines, research and development efforts are given the latitude needed to bring in experts and equip them to develop ground-breaking advances. Microsoft Corp employs developers who work along with theoretical researchers to bring new technologies to market faster. Sun Microsystems Laboratories rotates developers from product oriented groups through its research and development division. Once new technologies are developed, the programmers turn to commercializing their efforts. Interval Research is following a different path. It directs its entire effort to developing technologies for the purpose of licensing them to other parties to bring to market.

John S Mayo, previously a designer of computers and communications systems, is selected to be the president of AT&T Bell Laboratories. Mayo is currently vice president for the Network Systems and Network Services at Bell Laboratories. He replaces Ian M Ross, who assumes new duties helping to develop AT&T's international businesses.
