The Aug. 14, 2003 Northeast power failure gave a variety of companies and businesses an opportunity to showcase their contingency planning for such disasters.?IBM's office complex in Sterling Forest, NY had diesel-powered generators that began to function when the?electric power failed. Equinix, which maintains network data traffic centers in Newark and Secaucus, NJ, shifted?to battery-, then diesel-powered services to prevent any interruption to customers' data flow.?Examples of other disaster planning services are profiled.

What's in a game? A use for a gadget; 'geocaching' fills a need: what to do with all those G.P.S. units

Article Abstract:

Marist College student Robert Casinghino has joined the growing number of individuals who are using G.P.S. devices to play geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt game. He hides a treasure trove, records its location on a G.P.S. receiver and then posts the location on the Internet. Others are then challenged to find the hidden treasure.
