Greed, graft, gold: Canadians find treasure in one of the world's most corrupt countries

Article Abstract:

Executives from several mining firms converged on Jakarta, Indonesia, during Feb 1997, to negotiate control of the lucrative Busang gold deposit. Barrick Gold Corp dropped out, and Bre-X Minerals Ltd retained a 45% stake. The Indonesian government, Freeport-McMorRan and Mohamad Hasan split the rest.

Busang mystery: Bre-X investors are demanding answers

Article Abstract:

Mining experts are taking samples from the Busang gold mine in an effort to determine if the gold deposit was overstated. Two previous drillings failed to find gold. The mysterious death of geologist Mike de Guzman raises further questions about the deposit. Bre-X Minerals faces numerous lawsuits.

Body of evidence: controversy over a corpse fuels the Bre-X scandal

Article Abstract:

Geologist Michael Antonio de Guzman was one of the key figures in the Bre-X Minerals hoax. He reportedly jumped out of a helicopter shortly after the scandal became public, but many people believe he faked his own death in order to escape. Details of autopsy are presented.
