Prime Minister John Howard's task in 1999 will be to get the Good and Services Tax (GST) through the Senate, but the Coalition government is struggling to eliminate the bureaucracy within its own ranks. More than $24 bil in resource investments and Australia's role as an Asian regional center are at stake.

Australian Labor Party politician Mark Latham's ideas on softening capitalism have caused some worries that he may adversely affect their fortunes in the March 27th election. Party leader Kim Beazley wants to avoid the appearance of disunity while retaining constructive thinkers like Latham.
