HDTV preps for gradual transition

Article Abstract:

A total of 42 television stations are scheduled to to start transmitting digital signals on Nov. 1, 1998 to comply with the requirement of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to have all TV stations converted to digital transmissions by 2006. Most of the digital broadcasts that the 42 TV stations in top 10 TV markets and 15 other cities in the US, are expected to take the form of supersharp high-definition TV programs. The launch of the Discovery mission, which features John Glenn on Nov. 5, 1998 will make it the first live news event broadcast in HDTV.

Big music firms think small

Article Abstract:

Three big music companies, namely Bertelsmann Music Group Inc, EMI and Universal are giving their support to a quarter-size recordable disc format, called DataPlay disc, to be sold in stores in fall 2001. The new format employs CD-like discs that can store up to five hours of CD-quality music as well as up to 500 megabytes of data. Prerecorded DataPlay discs are expected to retail for around the same price as current CDs, while blank discs will sell for around $5-$12.

Skirmishes over game system every kid wants

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp's PlayStation 2 video game system was an instant success when it hit US stores on Oct 26, 2000 and even before it arrived. At some stores, there were reports of disorderly customers, threats to people lining outside and a few incidents of stealing. On the same day, about 95% of the initial 500,000 units shipped to the US were sold. To meet demands, Sony will be shipping 100,000 units between now and the holiday shopping season.
