Health insurance rate growth on upswing?

Article Abstract:

Survey results show that the 1.4% rate of inflation lags behind the 3.3% rise in insurance premiums in first quarter 1998. The survey, which was conducted by KPMG Peat Marwick, also reveals that health maintenance organizations are losing market share, which could lead to higher expenses for employers. Health insurance costs increased an average of 2.6% the past five years as against 12.4% from 1988 to 1993, while 1998 trends show the return to double-digit inflation predicted by some experts has yet to occur.

IBM pension reviewed

Article Abstract:

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said it will study whether employers' switch to new pension plans discriminate against older employees. Many employers have converted their traditional pension plans to so-called cash balance plans, raising protests from mid-career employees who claim the switch has resulted in a loss of benefits in their case. Traditional pensions provide employees lifetime annuity, while cash balance plans give employees the option to take their money lump-sum if they leave.
