Protesters in Kuala Lumpur since the beginning of Nov 1998 have demanded the release of Anwar Ibrahim, who is jailed for acts of sodomy and five counts of corruption. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad personally ordered the investigation, but many suspect Ibrahim is in jail because he hoped to replace Mohamad. Furthermore, in the months before his jailing, the two men disagreed on economic issues facing Malaysia.

The economic crisis in Thailand has caused many people to commit suicide. Since July 1997, the suicide rates have doubled in Thailand and the government is setting up more mental-health clinics to counsel weary businessmen. People have lost their jobs, their cars, and are heavily in debt. Many people have turned to Buddhism in hopes of a better future.
