Hewlett and Sun in link to create networking software

Article Abstract:

Long-time rivals and members of competing Unix consortia, Hewlett-Packard Co and Sun Microsystems Inc, announce they plan to cooperate in the development software technology to enable computers from a variety of vendors to work together on a single network. The two companies and their respective Unix consortia continue to develop different versions of Unix, but the new object-oriented technology should make it easier to create software that runs under both flavors of the operating system. The two firms state their intention to submit their new software to the Object Management Group, a standards group attempting to create object-oriented and interoperability standards. A separate alliance headed by Microsoft Corp and Compaq Computer Corp is also developing object-oriented standards that could emerge as rivals to the HP-Sun technology.

Compaq and Microsoft plan alliance

Article Abstract:

Compaq and Microsoft announce that they will work together to develop hand-held computers, wireless communications products, pen-based machines and desktop peripherals such as compact-disk devices. Microsoft's chairman and CEO William H. Gates calls the partnership the most significant alliance the company has entered into in four to five years. Gates and Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq's president and CEO, said that their objectives are to create easy-to-use devices that are also easy to adapt or expand to new equipment. They also intend to set industry standards. Pfeiffer emphasized however that in creating new technology standards, Compaq does not plan on accumulating patents and licenses that will discourage other companies from purchasing related software from Microsoft.
