Hewlett and Convex in $18 million accord

Article Abstract:

HP announces it is purchasing five percent of Convex Computer Corp for $18 million, while Convex Computer agrees to use HP's reduced-instruction-set-computing chips in its massively parallel supercomputers. The alliance seems to be a reaction to other alliances formed between Cray Research Inc and Sun Microsystems Inc and other semiconductor and computer manufacturers. The agreement also allows Convex to buy products with the RISC technology and HP workstations for resale. HP may also purchase Convex products for resale. HP is hoping to increase the market share of its RISC technology products, eventually aiming at becoming an industry standard.

A super problem in supercomputers

Article Abstract:

Cray Computer Corp is seen as in difficulty after the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Cray's only customer for the company's new Cray-3 supercomputer, cancels its order. Lawrence Livermore cites delays as the reason, saying it will buy a Cray C-90 supercomputer from Cray Research Inc instead. Cray Research is Seymour Cray's former company, which he left in order to start Cray Computer Corp. When the news about the Lawrence Livermore contract was announced, Cray Computer's stock lost about half its value, falling to $5.75. Cray Research's stock increased $3.25, to $37.25.
