Highland Valley mine shuts down

Article Abstract:

Highland Valley Copper has announced that it will shut down its mine indefinitely starting May 15, 1999, because of the breakdown in the negotiations between management and the labor union. The company has been seeking to forge a cost-cutting deal with its workforce to enable it to make a profit amidst falling metal prices. Highland Valley is 50% owned by Cominco Ltd, while Teck Corp, Rio Algom Ltd and Highmont Mining Co holds a 13.9%, 33.6% and 2.5% stakes, respectively.

Ex-First Marathon brokers fined $25,000

Article Abstract:

Two former First Marathon Securities Ltd brokers have agreed to a settlement on conflict of interest charges regarding their role as investors, promoters and underwriters for junior mining company Cartaway Resources Corp. The British Columbia Securities Commission has imposed a fine of C$25,000 each to David Lyall and Eric Savics. The two brokers waived their right to a judicial review and will contribute half of the fine to an investor education program.
