Brenda Croft, the 34-year old director of the 2000 Adelaide Biennial, has accepted the job of Curator of Aboriginal Art at Perth's Art Gallery of Western Australia. The daughter of an Aboriginal father and a European mother, Croft has worked as a photojournalist and an arts administrator and helped to create Boomalli, an artists' cooperative, in 1987.

The economic problems at Sydney, Australia's Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) can be traced to the MCA's delusion that it is an independent body. It is part of the University of Sydney, and the university gave the MCA the old Maritime Services Building to use. The two institutions have had diverging interests since the museum opened in 1991.
