Hospitals Say They're Penalized By Medicare for Improving Care

Article Abstract:

Intermountain Health Care is trying to change the way Medicare reimburses hospitals for improving care, especially for patients with pneumonia. Medicare has fixed payments for the estimates of what an average cost of medical care per patient should be. This means that quality treatment which avoids a hospital stay is reimbursed poorly, and a more serious medical condition is underfunded. Doctors and administrators are trying to get Congress to address outdated and imbalanced financial policies that hinder that right kind of care.
