IN SHAKE-UP, DEAN NAMES GORE ALLY TO RUN CAMPAIGN

Article Abstract:

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has replaced his campaign manager Joe Trippi with former Al Gore aide Roy Neel to reorganize his efforts to win his first primary. Trippi's reaction was to resign and leave the campaign without the key influence who motivated volunteer support from young people and Internet contributions that raised $41 million in 2003, more than any other Democratic candidate. Now Dean faces the challenges of pulling together a disorganized campaign that has only $4.5 million as he faces seven primaries on Feb. 3 for which he has no advertising funds. Dean had spent $9.2 million in advertising, $6 million of which was used in Iowa and New Hampshire. Dean is hoping to stay competitive by accumulating enough delegates to sustain him as a viable candidate as the election year progresses.
