IRAN TURNS DOWN AMERICAN OFFER OF RELIEF MISSION

Article Abstract:

Iran has declined a US delegation, led by former American Red Cross president and current senator Elizabeth Dole, to assist in distribution of international relief supplies following the catastrophic earthquake in Bam. The demands on relief workers were the reasons Iraq conveyed it could not handle a US delegation visit at this time. Dole initiated the proposal based upon her overseas experience in helping other nations through national disasters. The US State Dept. thought the timing was right because of recent efforts to improve foreign relations between the two countries.
