Australian Prime Minister John Howard's trip to Shanghai, China to attend the 2001 APEC Summit meeting, afforded the politician plenty of opportunity to share the limelight with some of the top world leaders. With leadership as the theme of his reelection campaign, Howard's visit was the perfect election opportunity.

Ferntree Gully Road divides the electorate of Aston in south-east Melbourne in two, and is the focus of a July 2001 bielection that could prove crucial for Australian Prime Minister John Howard. The outcome of the bielection is believed to be a clear indication of the outcome of the federal election in late 2001.
