In southern India, a glimpse of Asia's high-tech future

Article Abstract:

Bangalore, India, is a high-tech center in that nation and is becoming known as the the Silicon Valley of India. Various US companies, including Digital Equipment Corp (DEC), Texas Instruments (TI) and Hewlett-Packard (HP), have facilities at Bangalore. The city, which is located in southern India, has a good climate and offers a pleasant lifestyle. Bangalore is sometimes compared to San Francisco. More important, from the computer industry's point of view, talented employees can be hired there for wages that are comparatively low. Senior programmers earn the equivalent of $400 to $600 per month. And there is the potential market of India's middle class, estimated to number about 120 million people. India's prime minister has also recently lifted restrictions on foreign investment in India.
