The Progressive Conservative Party will hold a convention in Winnipeg, Manitoba, starting on Aug 22, 1996. The party is attempting to make a comeback after its devastating defeat in Oct 1993. There is a power battle between moderates such as Jean Charest and the right-wing youth group.

There are five parliamentary seats being contested in Canada's Mar 25, 1996, by-elections, in addition to the closely watched race in Papineau/St-Michel, Montreal. The Bloc Quebecois could lose its status as the official opposition party if Reform party candidates do well.
