Investor forges tie with Steelworkers

Manhattan-based financier Wilbur Ross, who leads an industry-union coalition against trade-liberalization agreements, operates as a vulture investor targeting weak companies, buying their debt and picking their assets. The United Steelworkers of America invited Mr. Ross to address their anti-free-trade rallies and the businessman mentioned that it was the first time a management executive had appeared at such a gathering.

Company chief executive Sharon Patrick of the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. expects the company to have further losses because of the fallout from the trial and is making contingency plans to respond to any possible situation. It is reported that it had a full-year loss of $6.4-million (U.S.) compared with a $20-million profit in 2002, in spite of company experienced a profit in the fourth quarter.
