Prime Minister John Howard has moved the Office of Government Information and Advertising into his own department, renaming it the Government Communications Unit. The move has raised concerns that the information service will become a propaganda tool for incumbent governments, compromising its independence. The government recently violated the Privacy Act by using pensioners' and veterans' personal information to market their tax reform package.
