It's mating season in the oil patch

Article Abstract:

The oil-mining sector of Western Canada faces the possibility of more acquisitions and mergers in 1998 due to a sense of desperation created by declining stock prices and poor prices for oil. Companies operating in the highly-volatile gas and oil business continue to search for appropriate business partners with which to create synergies that will boost their declining businesses. A record C$16.3-billion worth of acquisitions and mergers were announced in 1997 by oil companies in Western Canada.
