Japanese criticized by chip makers; 5 companies are said to delay orders and charge higher prices

Article Abstract:

Sematech (Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Institute) officials accuse Japanese companies of withholding advanced semiconductor equipment allegedly as a tactic that is intended to dominate the worldwide semiconductor industry. These accusations come while Commerce Department representatives continue to negotiate with the Japanese, attempting to establish a new semiconductor trade agreement. Sematech says that Hitachi, Canon, Nikon, Tokyo Electron and Dai Nippon make equipment that is sold openly in Japan, but the same equipment is withheld from American manufacturers. According to Sematech, Americans encounter long delays or high prices when they try to buy from the Japanese. The General Accounting Office is investigating the situation. Separately, the Commerce Department released a report in Apr 1991 which indicated that the US share of chip-making equipment sales declined from 75 percent in 1980 to 49 percent in 1988. Japan's market share increased from 18 percent to 39 percent in the same period.

Bush to let Japanese buy concern vital to chip race

Article Abstract:

President George Bush said he will not block the sale of Semi-Gas Systems Inc to Nippon Sanso of Japan even though the company is a major supplier of gas distribution and control systems for the US semiconductor industry. The industry is trying to catch up with Japanese competition. Officials at Sematech, which is the government-industry alliance that hopes to bolster the US semiconductor industry, have threatened to cancel the contract with Semi-Gas Systems if the deal with the Japanese goes through. Nippon intends to acquire Semi-Gas Systems from Hercules Inc, a chemical producer that bought Semi-Gas Systems for $5 million in 1987.
