Judge restricts new merchandise at Eaton's

Article Abstract:

The Ontario Supreme Court has issued a clarified order that restricts bringing in new merchandise at T Eaton Co Ltd's liquidation sales. The court order stated that the retail chain, its liquidator and receiver are free to bring in goods that were already ordered before Aug 23, 1999, the date that T Eaton got court protection from its creditors. The court order also restricts the retail value of new goods before that date to C$75 million.

Quebec chains spread their wings

Article Abstract:

A number of Quebec, Canada, chains, such as Laval-based Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., have decided to venture and expand outside the province. The move has been spurred by their desire to be more competitive not only in their home base but also in other markets where competition is strong. The decision to expand has been also encouraged by market saturation and growth of the retailing industry in the province.

Cosmetic companies buying back goods from Eaton's at a loss

Article Abstract:

T Eaton Company Ltd, a troubled department store chain, has seen the exodus of multinational cosmetic suppliers, which are buyingback their goods at a substantial loss to protect their brand names and sales through other retailers. Companies such as Estee Lauder Inc, Chanel Inc and Shiseido Company Ltd do not want their named to be associated with the liquidation sales being carried out at the insolvent Eaton.
