Just how safe is that jet?

Article Abstract:

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records indicate that US airlines have flown tens of thousands of unsafe flights since the mid-1980s that should not have been allowed to leave the ground. An analysis by newspaper USA Today of 14 years of FAA enforcement actions against 23 US airlines found that these airlines frequently made errors in maintenance, security and flight operations in violation of federal safety rules. The number of fines levied against these airlines increased from 283 in 1996 to 664 in 1998.
