Justices Resist Religious Study Using Subsidies

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court upheld the policy of Washington State's Promise Scholarship Program that gives college scholarships to students who have academic merit and financial need as long as they are not seeking a degree in theology. A student sued the state because his interest in a pastoral ministry was grounds for rejection. The state's constitution bans funding for religious instruction. Justices O'Connor and Kennedy led the discussion about the implications of allowing these scholarships to cover religious education and the impact of a decision that would favor any religious institution's right to taxpayer funds.

Justices Agree To Tackle Antitrust Case

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court, at the urging of the US Chamber of Commerce, is willing to review a price-fixing case that foreign plaintiffs brought against various vitamin suppliers. The plaintiffs used US antitrust law as the basis for their case that the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld. Some vitamin manufacturers had accepted the decision of antitrust violation and paid federal fines of $900 million. The Chamber of Commerce wants to find out if the Sherman Antitrust Act applies to foreign transactions.
