Article Abstract:

Fort McMurray, Alberta, was once thought to be a safeguard for Canada' s energy future. The soil beneath McMurray contains extensive deposits of tar sand. As the country's energy priorities shifted away from oil self-sufficiency, the area's importance dwindled, but not its community spirit.

A budget that changed a nation's psychology

Article Abstract:

Paul Martin's proposed budget for Canada, which features some $6 billion in spending cuts, suggests that Canada is changing from a pro-spending governing philosophy to a fiscally austere governing philosophy. Early polling on the budget shows that most Canadians support the spending cuts.

Canada's ports are currently controlled by the federal agency Ports Canada, but officials are considering a plan that would give local entities more control over port management and finance. This would make Canadian ports more competitive with US ports, especially on the west coast.
