L.A. on the Riviera: stars and cinema vie for attention at Cannes

The 50th Cannes Film Festival held in May 1997 was the usual mix of distinguished filmmakers and Hollywood stars. Celebrities attending included Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Sylvester Stallone and Kim Bassinger. 'The Sweet Hereafter' and 'The Ice Storm' were two of the most popular films.

Champagne dreams: Canadians have a heady time at the festival

Article Abstract:

Many Canadian filmmakers attended the 50th Cannes Film Festival, which was held from May 7-18, 1997. Atom Egoyan's new film 'The Sweet Hereafter won the International Critics' Prize and also got a standing ovation. Also attending were David Cronenberg and actress Sarah Polley.

Starry, starry nights

Article Abstract:

The 21st annual film festival in Toronto, Ontario featured a number of films by Hollywood actors-turned-directors. The strong showing of women's movies was also a departure from Hollywood tradition. 'Grace of My Heart' and 'American Buffalo' are discussed.
