Laptops that take a licking

Article Abstract:

Laptops are most vulnerable to wear-and-tear usage that annually destroys eight percent of portable computers, according to research firm IDC. Ruggedized laptops are bulky and heavy, averaging 9-12 lbs., but they meet the armed forces MIL-STD-810E Environmental Spec standard for abusive handling. The 'ruggeds' include gel-mounted hard drives and watertight seals, but are usually marketed only through trade shows. They cost $4,000 to $5,000 and process data slowly because they lack fans and vents for cooling off.
