Laptops weigh heavily on schoolchildren

Article Abstract:

Australian school officials are appraising programs that require students to use laptop computers to become computer literate. Studies increasingly show that extended use of laptop computers can create health problems associated with bad posture. Reports show numerous students are victims of back, head, neck and shoulder pain. Attorneys indicate schools may be liable for enormous legal claims and medical officials indicate muscular-skeletal injuries during the developmental years may have lifelong effects.

Australia's most sophisticated submarines are utilizing outdated computer equipment because the Defence Department has been following a costly and absolute procurement process. The $5 billion Collins Class submarines are running on 10-year-old computer hardware however a Defence department spokesmen says a final contracted software version will replace the sea-trial version.

Facing up to crime

Article Abstract:

The New South Wales (NSW) and West Australian police forces are testing new video imaging technology to create a database of computerized mugshots, which will help them identify suspects. The creator, Viisage Technology, claims its technology is able to identify faces from among 150,000 images in just under two seconds.
