Life in the slow lane; rural residents are frustrated by sluggish Web access and a scarcity of local information online

Article Abstract:

Rural homeowners are finding DSL and cable modem Internet access is limited. While these services are available to better than 75% of residents in large cities, 1% and fewer small town users have them as an option, a Department of Commerce survey found. Often rural people have access via an independent Internet service provider, and must dial in at a long distance rate. During times of heavy use, like evenings, a 56K modem might connect at a 33K rate or slower. Satellite TV providers are beginning to offer 2-way Internet connections at competitive rates. Some ISP's are specializing in the rural market, and, by cultivating local sources, building up information on local events.

AT&T unit sees no halt in Net access; Exvite's troubles don't faze partners

Article Abstract:

AT&T Broadband, a partner of financially-troubled At Home Corp., says it will continue to offer high-speed Internet access should the company fail. Another partner, Cox Communications, has also made that stipulation. The service contracts are offered through At Home's Excite@Home and the number of cable-modem subscribers number 1.35 million.

Big Cable Companies See Next Challenge Around the Corner

Article Abstract:

Experts say that cable broadcasting industry leaders like Comcast and Time Warner Cable will soon have to offer bundles that include voice, or telephone services, in order to keep ahead of the regional Bell companies, which have begun offering television services in addition to broadband and telephone lines. Both cable companies, though, should soon be rewarded for ongoing network upgrades that were begun in the 1990s, enabling them to offer new services and add new customers.
