Loblaw to boost non-food items

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. (Toronto) is shifting into non-food areas, as the country's largest grocer aims, to become a non-stop shopping destination. Loblaw will sell general merchandise and services, as it adds 100 stores this year. The company is catering to consumers "needs" as opposed to their "wants," which are supplied by department stores.

Loblaw continues to see opportunities for growth

John Lederer, the president of Toronto, Ont.-based Loblaw Companies Ltd., has warned its unions not to make excessive demands. Loblaw, which is facing stiff competition from non-unionized retailers such as Wal-Mart Canada Corp., is remodeling its stores to resemble giant department stores.
