Automated speech recognition systems are becoming sophisticated enough to allow travellers to make airline reservations over the telephone without talking to a human telephone operator. Speech recognition systems translate phonetic speech patterns into digital information. Systems are increasingly used by the travel and financial industries. Computer analysts predict that personal computers will also be activated and operated by voice. Consumers have complained, however, that automated services are more frustrating than personal telephone connections. The number of telephone operators in the US has decreased by a third to 159,000 since 1990.
