Lost at sea

Article Abstract:

The Australian government's proposal to ship offshore all asylum-seekers who arrive on the mainland boat, continues its creative approach to meeting its international obligations. The proposed distinction between the refugees arriving by boat and by air is driven by Canberra's desire to stem the flow of asylum-seekers from Papua and mend relations with Jakarta, but the United Nations High Commission on Refugees reads it as punitive and discriminatory.

A profile on the life and works of Nancy Pearl, a librarian and a successful author are presented. 'Book Lust' and its sequel 'More Book Lust' written by Nancy Pearl were best sellers and thus she got an invitation in Australia to guest at the Sydney Writers' Festival to be held in May 2005.

Article Abstract:

Granted the amount of discussion in Australia regarding refugees, former refugees and their experiences are discussed. Each person profiled -- two Afghani women, an Ethiopian man, and a Bosnian man -- has a unique perspective of Australia and what it has to offer.
